Aviation Archaeology is a controversial subject that roots back to post World War II. The process was a result of British and American military forces excavating the aviation wreck sites in search of shot-down planes etc.

Over the years worldwide ancient folk literature provides enough evidence of air transportation in the past. Therefore aviation archeology should be studied with a broader perspective and scope.

Civilizations are developed by imagining the future according to the existing or imagined technology. Therefore we could use this concept as a path to empower the thinking and creativity of mankind.

Verdict text dating back to 16000BC talks about the heavier than air flying machine propelled by the use of mercury.

Sri Lankan folk literature is associated with myths related to the unique technology of aviation used in the pre-historic age.

Maharishi Valmiki,s Ramayana provides evidence of king Rāvana bringing Sita Devi from India in a “Pushpaka Vimana” which is widely known in Sri Lanka as the “Dandu Monara Yanthranaya”, or Large Peacock Machine in Sinhala. King Ravana is considered the first king who flew over the world with his airplane or air machine, Dandumonaraya. Some evidence of Dandumonaraya the air machine is found in Rock inscriptions, Jataka (folk) Stories, and Ola leaf manuscripts. It is believed that he used Mercury as the fuel for the Dandumonaraya.

Sri Lanka has cities which are called Wariyapola, Translates to Wa – Air, Riya – Vehicle, Pola – Port or gathering place, and are believed to have been used in ancient times for the Pushpikha Vimanas to land and take off.

Lake gala or The rock of Lanka ( attributed as being the capital of Ravanas Kingdom in Lanka ). It is also believed that this rock was the aiming rock for all marine activities which took place on the Islands east coast, hence the name Lake Gala or Illakka Gala ( aim rock ).
