Like the great wine-growing regions of France, the tea country of Sri Lanka is divided up into several strictly defined regions or 'districts', each of which is known for producing teas of a particular character. Tea is produced mainly in 10 out of 25 districts in Sri Lanka, covering more than 200,000 hectares. The current annual production of tea in Sri Lanka is above 320,000 tons, making Sri Lanka the fourth-largest producer of tea in the world after China, India, and Kenya.
The British introduced tea into Sri Lanka then called Ceylon which is most commonly known as Ceylon Tea. The Tea Industry of Sri Lanka, is the lifeblood of the country today, providing direct employment to over 500,000 people, and producing for the world a beverage that is healthy, refreshing, and delicious. Ceylon Tea is one of the world's most famous teas for its distinct aroma and flavor.
